Welch, James M., was born in the town of Constable, Franklin county, N. Y., April 11, 1816, and is a son of Levi Welch, who was a farmer and lumberman. Mr. Welch was educated in the public schools at Grand Island, N. Y., and worked with his father until he was seventeen years of age, when his father died. He remained at home two years and then began traveling, working at all trades, until 1847, when hi entered the employ of the New York Central Railroad Company at Tonawanda, with which company he remained until his retirement (in 1893) from active service. He began his railroad career as a gravel man and retired as engineer at the age of seventy-seven, being the oldest engineer on the New York Central Railroad at that time. In 1849 he married Christiana Cupp of Tonawanda, and they have eight children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Welch is a large property owner and a highly respected citizen.
