Simmons, Edward, was born in Madison county, N. Y., August 1, 1815. The family were originally from Rhode Island, where his grandfather, Benjamin Simmons, settled before the Revolutionary war and served six years in the Continental army. Edward Simmons learned the jewelry and watchmaking trade at Hamilton, N. Y., and in 1838 came to Lockport, where he established a jewelry manufactory and watchmaking establishment in which he continued for thirty years. He also opened a music store in 1852, which be carried on up to 1856, and then became a member of Thomas, Hall & Simmons, the well known dealers in music and musical instruments. October 17, 1843, he married J. Augusta, daughter of William Goodrich. He died September 27, 1892, aged seventy-seven.
