Garrett, J. F., p. o. Brookfield, was born in Brookfield, April 5, 1820, a son of Elisha, son of Francis, who
came from Connecticut about 1800, as one of the early settlers. Elisha Garrett was born in Connecticut and came
to Brookfield when a young man and here spent the remainder of his days. His wife was Polly Treat, born in Brookfield,
and daughter of John Treat, an early settler from Connecticut; they had only one son, J. F. Garrett, the subject.
who was educated in the common schools and began working by the month on a farm when sixteen years of age and supported
his parents, his father being an invalid. At the age of twenty he began selling school books and followed that
occupation for four years, when he bought the farm of sixty acres where he resides, and has added to it until he
owns 160 acres of land. He has been for many years one of the large hop growers of Brookfield and has also a large
dairy. He has always been an ardent Republican, but not an aspirant to public office; he has been notary public
for several years and is a member of Sanger Lodge, No. 129, F. & A. M. In 1847 Mr. Garrett married Stature,
daughter of Martin Mason, an early settler of Stockbridge. Mr. Garrett has one adopted daughter, Hattie, wife of
James Sloan, a farmer, and who resides with Mr. Garrett. Mr. and Mrs. Garrett are members of the First Baptist
church.
