McCombs, J. W., was born June 9, 1853, educated at Falley Seminary, Fulton, and New York Dental College. Sickness prevented his completing his dental course and subsequently he went into the drug business with which he was connected in Clayton for fourteen years. He embarked in his present business in 1894. Mr. McCombs is a member of the Masonic fraternity, of the Odd Fellows and has been town clerk for years. He was trustee of the village in 1895 and has been nominated for supervisor. Mr. McCombs married Ellen Keys of Holland Patent, and they have two children: Esther J. and George R. Alexander McCombs, a direct ancestor of J. W. McCombs, was the original owner of the McCombs grant of land, of which see another part of this work.
