Sumner, Mrs. Clarissa, p. o. Corfu, N. Y.-The late Jerome Sumner was born in the
township of Pembroke, January 11, 1811, attended the schools of his day, was a farmer chiefly, also a carpenter
and joiner. April 20, 1843, he married Clarissa Bentley of Darien, who was born in Pultney, N. Y. Mrs. Sumner's
father, James Bentley, was born in Dutchess county, N. Y., in the year 1784, attended the schools of his day and
learned general blacksmithing. He removed to Steuben county when a young man and carried on his trade for many
years. He married Esther Marshall of that county, and they had seven children: Clarissa, Hezekiah, William H.,
Hallet G., James H., Judson C., and Sarah E. Hezekiah R. married twice; his second wife was Sarah Van Lovan; they
had four children' Jerome, Frank, Mary and Judson. William H. married three times. James H. was married. Judson
C. married Fannie Jennings; Sarah E. married Dr. C. C. Epley. Mr. Bentley and family came to Darien in 1839. He
died in 1868 and his widow in 1870. Mr. Sumner was a member of the Universalist church and was known to be a man
of industry, sobriety and integrity. Mrs. Sumner is an honored member of the same church.
