Samuel F. received a common school education, and early in life entered the employ of the New York Central Railroad; he is well known as a locomotive engineer, one of the oldest in Western New York; his service as an engineer covers a period of about forty years, which fact alone is substantial evidence of his ability, carefulness and fidelity; for more than a quarter of a century he has drawn the passenger train between Batavia and Canandaigua, and not only stands high in the estimation of his employers, but has attained a foremost place as a citizen of Batavia. In 1838 he was married to Margaret, daughter of Jeremiah Foland; they are the parents of four children-Edward, Mary E., Cora A. and Grace M. Mr. Perkins is a Methodist.
