Moulthrop, M. Nelson, was born in Otsego. N. Y., April 25, 1822, a son of Josiah
and Sophia (Lanckton) Moulthrop, and was educated in the common schools. He engaged in mercantile business and
in 1845 went into business at Albion; in 1847 went to Milwaukee and from there to Oshkosh, remaining there six
years and was the first sheriff of Winnebago county under the State law. In 1859 he came to Elba and engaged in
farming. Mr. Moulthrop married Clarissa, daughter of Sherred Parker, in 1844, and they had two sons: Samuel P.
Moulthrop, principal of Washington Grammar School. Rochester; and Edwin N. Mrs. Moulthrop died in 1881. He married
again Mrs. Amanda Davis, a sister of his first wife. Mr. Moulthrop is one of the useful men of his town. He served
as justice of the peace twenty years and was for several years one of the Sessions justices of the county. He has
always taken an intelligent interest in school and church matters, and has sought to advance the best interests
of his town and its people.
