Gardner, Jeffrey W., was born in Schuyler county, N. Y., February 5, 1808, a son
of J. W. and Freelove Gardner. His father was a native of Rhode Island and was one of the pioneers of Genesee county,
settling in the town of Elba in 1809. Mr. Gardner was a practical and successful farmer, and his career in life
was the embodiment of industry, honesty and commendable aspirations; his death, on May 1, 1882, removed from the
community an active and useful citizen. Mr. Gardner married Mrs. Martha M. Atwater, widow of Eli Atwater, who had
two children: Lucius Atwater, born in Wisconsin, December 23, 1868. and Mary Minerva Atwater, born September 27,
1870. Two children also blessed the second union: Jeffrey T., born October 27, 1876, died March 23, 1877; and Grace
F., born November 28, 1878, who still lives on the homestead farm with her mother. Hon. John C. Gardner, of the
town of Oakfield, was the eldest brother of Jeffrey W., and was prominent in the growth and progress of his town,
filling many important positions, and was elected to the Assembly in 1849. He was thrice married: first to Atha
Field, who died August 6, 1861; second to Harriet D. Hose, who died August 7, 1870; and third to Jane Britton,
who died August 5, 1S9S. Mr. Gardner died May 29, 1882, honored and respected by all who knew him.
