Biography of Seth M. Hinman of Batavia, NY

Seth M. Hinman, lately the genial manager of the Hotel Richmond, began his life in Cattaraugus County, where he was born in 1844 He enlisted in 1861 in Co. C, 64th N. Y. Inf., as a private, and served nearly four years; In 1863 he received a commission as first lieutenant of Co. D, and had command of his company until the close of the war. He participated in is battles with the Army of the Potomac, and at the battie of Spottsylvania was severely wounded. After the close of the war he engaged in the dry goods business at Ellicottville for about five years, and then became a commercial traveler.. This engaged his attention for 10 years; subsequently he engaged in the hotel business at Attica for three years. and then went to Warsaw, where he leased the Purdy House, and conducted it about 18 months. He then came to Batavia and was connected with the management of the Purdy House until April, 1889, when he became manager of the Hotel Richmond. He was well qualified to fill that responsible position, having a wide acquaintance among the traveling public. He is a Mason and a member of the G. A. R. In 1867 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Miller, daughter of Dr. H. B. Miller, of Alexander. They have two children, Edward .M. and Blanche A.
