Eli B. Smith was born in Chateaugay August 11, 1806, and made that place his home for about sixty years, when
he removed to Malone. Though always leading a quiet life, and apparently caring for little that was not of a business
nature, he yet had a very strong interest in public matters. He gave the site for the Chateaugav high school, a
lot for an engine house in Chateaugay, the organ to the Chateaugay Presbyterian church, a considerable collection
of booki to The Wead Library in Malone, and the chimes to the Congregational church of Malone. He died January
15, 1890.
