Biography of Charles I. Smith


Smith, Charles I., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born on the Smith homestead, February 14, 1828, and was educated in the common schools and has always followed the honorable occupation of farming. He was married twice; first in 1855 to Laura A. Heath, and they had one daughter, Ellen E. Mrs. Smith died in 1865, and on March 30, 1867, Mr. Smith married Hattie H. Sisler, and they have four children: George A., Harry H., Albourn E. and Daniel W. Ellen E. married William Herishaw of the town of Aurora, and they have one son, Everett C.; George A. married Emma Foot of East Hamburg, and they have one son, Russell F. Mr. Smith has been one of the assessors of the town for twentyfour years. His father, Dr. Elisha F. Smith, was born in Rutland county, Vt., in 1792, and came with his parents to Cayuga county, where he was educated in the common schools and studied medicine and became a practicing physician. He came to this town on horseback with only $2.50 in his pocket, which was the amount of his earthly possessions. In 1814 he married Mary Husse of the town of Collins, and they had a daughter, Mary 3. Mrs. Smith died and he married Elizabeth Howland of Ontario county, and they had eleven children: Erasmus, Erlon G., Louisa (who died at the age of three years), Charles I. (as above), Addis E., Mortimer F., Alcy E., Maria L., Helen V., Harriet I. and E. Fitch. Dr. Smith was supervisor of the town for seventeen years and served two terms in the State Legislature, in 1837 and again in 1844. He died in 1867 and his widow in 1876.
