Schwinger, Christoff, Buffalo, is one of the old representatives and successful business men of Tonawanda, Erie
county. He was born in Wurtemberg, Germany. October 22, 1825, and is a son of Michael and Elizabeth Schwinger.
He attended the schools in his natfve place and worked on a farm with his father. In 1840, when a boy of about
sixteen, he came to America alone, being preceded by twelve years by an older brother. He came direct to Tonawanda
and soon found employment at various occupations, such as farming, canal boating, etc. He was industrious and saving,
and in 1857 bought a farm in Wheatfield, Niagara county, and has since then owned numerous other farms. He now
owns a valuable farm of 155 acres joining Tonawanda village. He later identified himself in the brewing business,
in which he is still interested, owning $25,000 in stock in the Brush Brewing Company of Tonawanda. In 1875, with
Edward Evans, he organized the banking house of Evans & Schwinger; in 1886 the name was changed to The State
Bank. In 1889 Mr. Schwiuger was elected vice-president of the bank, which office he still holds, being also one
of the directors of the bank. He is proprietor and superintendent of a livery stable, owns four stores and numerous
other buildings in the village, and is one of the directors and stockholders of the Tonawanda Gas Company. In politics
Mr. Schwinger is a Republican; he served his town two terms as supervisor, has been village trustee, and was president
of the board of village school trustees for six years. He is a member of the Masonic Fraternity. He has been twice
married, his first wife being Sarah Kopp, by whom one daughter, Elizabeth (Mrs. Walter Brock) of Buffalo, was born;
his second wife was Susan Kopp, a sister of his first wife, and they have one daughter, Sarah (Mrs. William Warren),
of Tonawanda.
