Biography of Valentine Schmahl

Schmahl, Valentine, Hamburg, p. o. Athol Springs, was born in Buffalo, N. Y., February 24, 1847. November 3, 1861, he enlisted in Co. H, 17th U. S. Infantry, and in 1863 was appointed chief bugler of the regiment; was honorably discharged at Fort Lafayette, New York Harbor, November 3, 1864. May 19, 1870, he married Margaret Bingenhimer, formerly of Germany, and they have cne daughter, Ellen M. Mr. Schmahl's father, Christopher, was born in Germany in 1820; he was married twice; first to Eve Erbes, who died in 1850, and for his second wife he married his first wife's sister, Louise. Christopher Schmahl died in March, 1862, and his widow survives at this date (1896).
