Biography of John Ehlers


Ehlers, John, East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in Germany, April 18, 1849, and came with his parents to the United States in 1866, locating in the town of East Hamburg. November 25, 1867, he enlisted in Co. L, 1st Artillery, U. S. A., was appointed corporal and afterwards promoted to duty sergeant, and was honorably discharged November 25, 1870; he returned to East Hamburg, and September 18, 1871, married Maria Kuehl, formerly of his native place. Mr. and Mrs. Ehlers were the parents of twelve children: John C., William H. (married Louise Kophinst), Henry C., Charles L., Ludwig F., August H., Edward C., Minnie C., Frederick J., Maria S., Dora M. (who died in her fourth year) and Louise W. Mr. Elher's father, Charles Elhers, was born at the old, home in Germany in 1819; he married Maria Kessler, and they had nine children: Helena, Dora, John (as above), Minnie, Sophia, Frederica, William, Henry and Louise. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ehlers are both living at this date (1897). Mrs. Ehlers's father, John Kuehl, was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, in the year 1817; he married Louise Brinkmann, and they had two children, Maria and Caroline. Mr. and Mrs. John Kuehl are both living at this date (1897). John Ehlers is a member of Erie Tent No. 161, K. O. T. M., Orchard Park, N. Y. In his political choice he is a staunch Republican, and has just been elected collector of his town, after serving as inspector of election for the last seven years, being chairman of the board four years.
