Biography of Jacob Eckhardt

Eckhardt, Jacob, Hamburg, was born in the town of Eden, Erie county, N. Y., April 10, 1845. During early life he worked on his father's farm and this was his occupation until 1869. On April 15 of that year he married Catherine Lamy, by whom he had seven children, of whom three, Julia C., George J. and Flora L., still survive. Mr. Eckhardt came to the village of Hamburg very shortly after his marriage and embarked in a grocery and saloon business near the site where his present hotel is located. In 1883 his place of business was entirely destroyed by fire and on the year following the present brick block was erected. He still conducts the hotel under his own name, but is associated in the grocery business with George E. Federspiel. Mr. Eckhardt's first wife died November 7, 1888, and April 19, 1892, he married Louise Hauck of Buffalo. His parents were Germans and came to this country from Alsace, Germany, in the early part of the present century.
