Cole, James, East Hamburg, p. o. Ellicott, was born in Greenfield, Saratoga county, N. Y., June 20, 1808. He was educated in the schools of that day and came to this town with his parents when an infant. He has been a successful farmer and retired in 1880. January 19, 1887, he married Almira Francis, and they had three children; Nelson W., born October 31, 1838; Oscar. born November 25, 1846, and Helen, died in infancy. Nelson W. married Josephine Blackmar, and they have one son, Herman B., who is a practicing physician of Hamburg, and Oscar married Mary M. Francis, and they have four children: James F., Charles H., Clarence C. and Jessie. Mr. Cole's father, Edward Cole, was born in Rhode Island in 1782. He married Chloe Griffin, and they had twelve children. Jonathan, Ambrose, James (as above), Edwin, Martin, Henry, Calvin, Pamelia, Alathaer, Lizzie, Sarah A. and Phebe. Mr. Cole died in 1868 and his wife in 1840. Mrs. Cole's father, Charles H. Francis, was born in East Hamburg, in November, 1808. He was educated in the district schools and married twice, first to Mary Pomroy and had two sons, Morris J. and Abram V., and for his second wife he married Laura Darling, and they had three daughters: Mary M., Laura and Josephine. Mr. Francis died March 2, 1888, and his wife in November, 1879.
