Briggs, George W., East Hamburg, p. o. Orchard Park, was born in the town of Collins, Erie county, N. Y., October 10, 1831. He was educated in the public schools, and has had a variety of occupations; in early life he was a farmer and taught school several terms. He became a resident of East Hamburg in 1881, and the following year began to sell agricultural implements, fertilizers, cement, hardware, paints, oils, carriages and wagons, and his business has steadily increased, until now he is carrying on a successful and lucrative trade. He has served the county as deputy sheriff twelve years, under Koch, Gilbert and Jenkins; he was elected twice as justice of the peace, serving one full term. In the spring of 1889 he was elected supervisor of the town and resigned the office of justice; he was defeated for supervisor in 1890, but was elected in 1891, re-elected every year from 1892 to 1897 inclusive. He has served on important committees through the several terms and was elected chairman of the board in 1896 and 1897. December 29, 1895, he married Auselia E. Pike of the town of Concord, Erie county, N. Y., and they have three children: Norman E., Grace C. and Ethel O. Mr. Briggs's father, Isaac, was born in Old Hamburg, January 2, 1817: in 1850 he married Margaret M. McMichael, and they had six children: George W. (as above), Burlinton M., Eldridge I., Horace M., Elmer (who died at the age of thirteen), and a baby not named. The family have authentic figures of its origin dating to 1540. Mr. Briggs is a member of Zion Lodge, No. 514, F. & A. M., of Orchard Park; of Buffalo Chapter No. 70, R. A. M., of Buffalo: of Lake Erie Commandery No. 26, K. T., of Buffalo; and Ismalia Temple A. A. O. N. M. S. and of East Aurora I. O. O. F.
