Biography of John Young
Chemung County, NY Biographies





Young, John, born in Bavaria, Germany, in 1834, was educated in the public schools of that place and served a regular apprenticeship at the tailoring business. In 1857 he came to America in the sailing vessel George Canning and first located in Baltimore, Md. In 1861 he went to Washington, D. C., where he remained until 1865, when he removed to Philadelphia, Pa., where he remained two years. In 1867 he came to Elmira, where he has since resided. He formed a coparnership in the merchant tailoring business under the firm name of Stowell & Young. October 13, 1859, he married. Adamine Helms, of Baltimore, but formerly of Hamburg, Germany. Mr. Young is a member of Union Lodge F. and A. M., of the Commandry, and of several other societies. They reside on Maple avenue in Elmira.
