Biography of Warren H. Tremaine
Chemung County, NY Biographies





Tremaine, Warren H., was born in Lindleytown, Steuben County, N. Y., November 26, 1845. His father moved to Tioga County, Pa., where he died January 15, 1878, and Warren H. returned to Lindleytown in 1861, where he enlisted in Company D, One Hundred and Forty first Infantry New York Volunteers, August 21, 1862. His brothers, Lyman and Gilbert, enlisted about this time in the same regiment. There were six of the same family in the army at one time. Warren H. served iu the Army of the Potomac till after the battle of Gettysburg, when he was transferred to the Army of the Cumberland and was with General Sherman in his march to the sea. He was honorably discharged May 20, 1865, having served thirty three months. Mr. Tremaine taught school and sold goods until 1876, when, on September 11th, he married Eva M., daughter of Dr. Henderson A. and Aithea M. Phillips, of Knoxville, Pa., by whom he had one daughter, Bessie A., born October 5, 1878. Members of the family participated in the Revolutionary war and in the War of 1812. John, the father of Warren H.,was born in the State of New York, December 2, 1816, and married Abigail B. Goodwin, of Lowell, Mass, They had ten children, namely: Almira M., Seth K., Lyman J., John A., Gilbert H., Warren H., Abigail A., Urren A., Maria L., and Theodore M. His second wife was Betsey Whipple, by whom he had two children, Willis J. and Luther D.
