Smith, Hon. Walter Lloyd, justice of the Supreme Court of New York State, was educated at the Elmira Academy
and Princeton College, graduating from the latter in 1877. He read law with his father, Judge Horace Boardman Smith,
and was admitted to the bar in May, 1879. In March, 1888, he succeeded his father as justice of the Supreme Court
by appointment of Governor Hill, and was elected to the office in the following fall for a term of fourteen years
from January 1, 1889. At the time of his appointment he was only thirty one years of age. In 1884 he was a Republican
delegate to the National Convention. Judge Smith is a member of the Presbyterian Church.
