Biography of Henry V. Ransom
Chemung County, NY Biographies

Ransom, Henry V., was born in Madison County, N. Y., November 23, 1843, and came to Elmira in 1856. Here he was educated at the academy and became an employee of the United States Express Company. During the encampment here of the One Hundred and Seventh Regiment he was drummer, and when that command went to Washington he accompanied it. Rheumatism, which has crippled him for life, prevented him from continuing with the regiment and in consequence he returned to Elmira. In 1864 he engaged with the United States Express Company, but in 1865 he was again incapacitated with rheumatism. At the end of a year he entered the employ of the Merchants Union Express Company, and later read law with his brother, who is now the surrogate of New York city. After a brief engagement with the Southern Tier Savings Bank he was again laid up with rheumatism until 1876, and in January, 1881, he was elected justice of the peace, serving until January, 1888, when he was elected county clerk on the Democratic ticket.
