Biography of Charles H. Potter
Chemung County, NY Biographies





Potter, Charles H., was born in Springfield, Bradford County, Pa. January 29, 1838. He was educated in the common schools and in Springfield Academy. September 11, 1862, he enlisted in Company I, One Hundred and Forty first Infantry New York Volunteers, was taken prisoner in June, 1863, while on the march, by South Carolina scouts, was duly paroled, was very sick in the general hospital at Annapolis, Md., and was honorably discharged as corporal on surgeon's certificate of disability October 11, 1863. After his return he resided in Michigan for ten years, where be was town clerk for three terms. In 1873 he became a permanent resident of Elmira, being for several years general agent and local secretary for a life insurance society here. In 1890 he became associated with Newlove Willison in the pension business and is one of the notaries public of the city. Mr. Potter is a member of L. Edgar Fitch Post. No. 165, G. A. R., and Pilgrim Lodge, No. 180, F. and A. M. Mr. Potter has never married, but is a jolly bachelor.
