Biography of John Newkirk
Chemung County, NY Biographies





Newkirk, John, born in Ulster County, N. Y., in 1795, married Amy Burhance, who was born in Dover, Dutchess County, in February, 1806. They had nine children. five of whom grew to maturity: Milton, Nellie, Isaac, Ann M., and Rachel. Milton Newkirk, born September 18, 1824, was educated in the public schools, and came first with his parents to Pennsylvania when a small boy. Thence they moved to Tompkins County, N. Y., and when he was twenty one years old they came to Chemung County. Even at that date the farm he now owns was all timber. Mr. Newkirk in politics is a Democrat and was chosen by his townsmen in 1817 as supervisor, continuing in office four years. He has been assessor seven years and has served as justice of the peace six years. His grandfather. Isaac Newkirk, was a soldier in the Revolution. The family first came to America about 1635. They are of English and Dutch decent.
