Biography of Jacob Kolb
Chemung County, NY Biographies





Kolb, Jacob, park commissioner and city assessor, was born in Alsace, France, December 27, 1841, and came to America in 1860. For a few months he followed his trade of machinist, but soon came to Elmira, where his brother (now retired) was in the hotel business. He then bought the Exchange Hotel, which he owned and managed for about twenty five years. He was in 1888 and 1890 chairman of the Democratic City Commission, was appointed first assessor by Mayor Stanchfield, and reappointed by Mayor Davison, being now in his sixth year of that office. He was park commissioner two years and has recently been appointed for a second term by Mayor Davison. Mr. Kolb is a Knight Templar and a member of the I. O. O. F. At present he is engaged quite extensively in the real estate business, and in connection therewith conducts a hotel, which was erected by his brother. He married Caroline Metzger in 1871 and has a son and two daughters.
