Jones, Hervey E., born in Towanda, Pa., on September 11, 1840, is a son of Henry Jones, Sr., who came to Elmira
when the son was three years of age. He moved to Iowa in 1852, but returned to Elmira and died there in October,
1864, aged seventy years. He reared eleven children, all of whom died but five. Hervey E. Jones was educated in
the common schools of Elmira and in Iowa, and taught school in the latter State. Upon the outbreak of the war in
1861 he enlisted as private at Davenport, Ia., and served three years and one month. He participated in the battles
of Corinth, luka, Farmington, and other skirmishes, through all of which he passed without a wound. After the war
Hervey E. returned to Elmira and engaged as fireman on the Erie Railroad, leaving this position in 1870 to become
a locomotive engineer. Mr. Jones is a member of Union Lodge, No. 95, F. and A. M., a member of the B. of L. E.,
a past commander and now an officer of the day of Baldwin Post, No. 6, G. A. R., and aid de camp on the staff of
the deputy commander. He married, January 29, 1866, Miss Rhoda E., daughter of John Rees. She died January 31,
1885.
