Biography of George W. Holbert
Chemung County, NY Biographies





Holbert, George W., born in Minisink, Orange County, N. Y., September 13, 1835, came with his parents to Broome County, N. Y., when seven years old. There they remained three years, when they came to this county. George W. was educated in the common schools and in Deckertown Academy, and October 13, 1859, married Barbara Badger, of Union, Broome Oounty. They had five children: Charles, who married Mary V. Goodspeed and located in Knoxville, Pa.; Frank, who married Sarah Cox, of Deckertown, N. J., and resides at Union, Broome County, N. Y.; Judd and Tarcy B., who live at home; and George W., who died in infancy. Mr. Holbert, on October 2, 1861, enlisted in Company K, Twenty third New York Infantry Volunteers, and was honorably discharged on a surgeon's certificate of disability. He has resided in the county for forty six years, and has been town clerk and justice of the peace for several years.
