Hoffman, Edward M., of the firm of E. M. & H. N. Hoffman, growers of fruit and ornamental trees and roses, was born on January 14, 1857, and is a son of George W. Hoffman. He worked three years for the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Express Company and in 1885 engaged in the nursery business. Mr. Hoffman on October 1, 1874, enlisted in Company D, One Hundred and Tenth Battalion N. G. S. N. Y., as a private, and April 2, 1877, was made second lieutenant of the same company, whose designation soon afterward changed to the Thirtieth Separate Company Infantry. He was promoted first lieutenant of the latter company on November 29, 1881, and lieutenant colonel and assistant adjutant general of the Seventh Brigade on December 6, 1884. August 5, 1885, he was placed on the supernumary list by reasoll of the disbandment of the brigade. In 1886 Mr. Hoffman was again made first lieutenant of th& Thirtieth Separate Company, and in September, 1890, was promoted captain of the company. He devotes his time assiduously to business and to military matters. October 19, 1882, he married a daughter of William A. Brooks. They have no children. The business of E. M. & H. N. Hoffman was established in the spring of 1885. They now handle 500,000 trees and 50,000 roses yearly.
