Chemung County, NY Biographies

Herendeen, Edward G., of the Elmira Bar, born in Wayne County, N. Y., October 19, 1887, is a son of E. W. Herendeen, of Geneva, N. Y., president of the Herendeen Manufacturing Company, of that city. He was graduated at Hobart College in 1879 with the degree of B.A. and was the salutatorian of his class. In 1882 he received the degree of M.A. from the same institution, and by appointment delivered the master's oration for that year. His legal education was obtained in the office of the late Hon. H. Boardman Smith, justice of the Supreme Court, and he was admitted to the bar early in 1882. He began practice at once and soon formed a partnership with Robert J. Knox, a son of the late Rev. Dr. W. E. Knox. The firm was dissolved in 1887 upon the removal of Mr. Knox to Minnesota, and Mr. Herendeen was alone in practice until June, 1891, when the firm of Herendeen & Mandeville was organized, the junior partner being H. C. Mandeville. They are the attorneys for the New York State Association of Hardware Jobbers, the Elmira National Bank, the Elmira Building Company, and the Elmira Savings Bank. Mr. Herendeen was married in April, 1887, to Miss Ida S. Barton, daughter of R. W. Barton, of Elmira. She died October 1, 1889, leaving an infant son.
