Biography of William Falck
Chemung County, NY Biographies





Falck, William, treasurer and general manager of the La France Fire Engine Company, was born in Prussia, November 25, 1837, and came to the United States in 1857, locating first in New York city. A year later he entered the regular army as private of Company F, Second Regiment Infantry, and was promoted through the various grades to sergeant major. After the battle of Antietam, Md., he was commissioned a second lieutenant in his regiment and a few months later a first lieutenant. At the battle of Spottsylvania Court House, Va., May 10, 1864, he received a severe gun shot wound through the left lung, disabling him for the rest of the war, in 1866 he was promoted a captain, and for gallant services during the battles of Chancellorsville and Spottsyivania Court house, Va., he received the three brevets of captain, major, and lieutenant colonel. After the close of the war Colonel Falck was stationed in the South, taking active part in the reconstruction of that section. In 1877 he was sent with his regiment to Idaho, taking part in the campaign against the Nez Perces Indians. In 1883, owing to disability incurred in the line of duty, of exposure and wounds, Colonel Falck was placed on the retired list. In 1867 Colonel Falck, while stationed in Elmira on recruiting service, renewed his acquaintance with Miss Mary Bradford McQuhae, of that city, marrying her in July ol that year. His wife was his faithful companion during the sixteen years of army service subsequent to the war and until his retirement, after which Colonel Felck settled in Elmira and became connected with the La France Fire Engine Company, whose manager he has been since 1885. He is an honorary member of the Thirtieth Separate Company and prominent in Baldwin Post, G. A. R. Colonel and Mrs. Falck have two sons.
