Diven, George M., A.M., attorney and counselor at law, born in Allegany County, N. Y., in 1835, is a son of
Gen. A. S. Diven (q. v.). Mr. Diven was graduated from Hamilton College in 1857 as A.B., and afterward received
from the same institution, of which he has been for seventeen years a trustee, the honorary degree of A.M. He began
the study of law while at college, finished it in the office of Diven, Hathaway & Woods, and was admitted in
1860. He began practice in the office of his preceptors and has since devoted his time and energies to the requirements
of his profession. His specialty is corporation law. He was for twelve years attorney for the Erie Railway Company,
and is now solicitor for the Northern Central and the Lehigh Valley Railroad Companies in the State of New York.
He is president of the Elmira Water Company, president of the La France Fire Engine Company, has been a member
of the Board of Education and was for seven years its president, and is connected with other important industries.
He is also the president for 1891-92 of the New York State Bar Asssociation. His son, Eugene, is superintendent
of the La France Fire Engine Company; a. second son is a student at Yale; a third is at Lehigh University; and
a fourth is preparing for college.
