Best, James, who came to Orange County, N. Y., in 1843, was born near Leeds, Yorkshire, England, March 11, 1822.
About 1844 he married Lucinda Johnson, of that county, and they have live children: Mary A., Elizabeth, Amanda,
Emma, and William A. In 1851 he came to Southport and worked for Charles Evens for six years, and in 1857 he moved
to Horseheads, locating on Newtown Creek. He removed in 1868 to near Breesport and built a woolen and carding mill,
putting in about $4,000 worth of machinery suitable for custom work. He has conducted the business successfully
for thirty three years.
