Battersby, Patrick, was born in Ireland in 1847 and came to America in 1866. He was a clerk in a merchandise
house in Troy, N. Y., for nine years, and removed to Elmira in 1875, where he was engaged in the grocery business
for three years on Broadway. He was a commercial traveler for about three years, and in 1881 was with the Atlantic
and Pacific Tea Company, with whom he has been engaged ever since. He was elected a member of the Board of Education
in 1877, and has held that office for eight successive terms. In the meantime he has served by appointment as excise
commissioner for three years, commencing in May, 1885. He is a member of the Catholic Church, a staunch Republican,
and has been for sixteen years a member of the School Board. He married, in Troy, N. Y., in 1875, Miss Curran,
and they have four children living.
