Biography of Abram Barnes

Barnes, Abram, a native of New York, came to Van Etten about 1810, among the early settlers, where he cleared a farm and remained until his death at anadvanced age. By his wife, Ruth, he had twelve children : Hannah, Moses, Jesse. Catherine and Sarah (twins), Betsey, Abram, Jeremiah, Reuben, Oliver, Abbie, and John. The latter was born in Van Etten, where he was killed by a runaway team on September 16, 1866. He married Phoebe, daughter of Benjamin and Jerusha Annis, and his children are Columbus, Jerusha, Janette, Sarah, Phineas, John, Abram, and Benjamin. Benjamin Barnes, born in Cayuga, N. Y., March 16, 1829, married Hannah Barnes, of Newfield, N. Y., October 14, 1857, daughter of Benonia and Jeruslia (Clark) Barnes, and they had one son, Walter F., who died Juno 20, 1888, aged twenty six. Benjamin Barnes has been proprietor of a hotel for eighteen years. He is now managing thie Barnes Hotel at Swartwood. Benonia Barnes was born in Ithaca, N. Y., and died February 8, 1888, aged eighty three. He was a class leader in the Methodist Episcopal Church for over fifty years. His wife, Jerusha, died aged seventy six. She was born in Lansing, Cayuga County, N. Y., in 1803, and was the mother of eight children. She was a devoted Christian for more than half a century.
