Broome County, NY Biographies

JAMES O'NEIL - One of the pioneers in the development of the city of Binghamton, New York, was the late James O'Neil, who had the distinction of being the man who laid the first brick used in the construction of the first building on Water street. Mr. O'Neil was a native of County Clare, Ireland, where he was born November 22, 1838. At the age of ten years he was brought by his parents to this country, and he received his education in the parochial schools here.

It was in 1877 that Mr. O'Neil established himself in Binghamton industrial and business life by opening a plant for the manufacture of carriages, wagons and sleighs, on lower South Water street. Three years later, the business having developed on a scale too extensive for that location, he removed to larger quarters at No. 259 Water street, where there was room for further expansion, and it is there the factory is still being operated by his heirs as the James O'Neil Estate, his daughter, Mary E. O'Neil, being executrix. Mr. O'Neil had a record of patriotic service in the United States navy during the Civil War, serving on the ironclad boat "The Dictator". He died May 9, 1918.

In 1870 Mr. O'Neil was united in marriage with Nora C. Hall, of Indiana, and of this union eight children were born, two of these, Robert A. and Francis J., being deceased. The six living children are: Mary E., a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy; James M., William E., Sarah E., also a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy; Florence C., a graduate of Cortland Normal School; and Frederick A., who has a very creditable military record, he having served on the Mexican Border, and also in the World War as a member of the Ambulance Corps. He saw active service in France during the celebrated battles at Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Argonne Forest. He was given an honorable discharge April 4, 1519.
