JAMES H. MORAN, one of the leading business men of Deposit, was born in that village August 15, 1866, and is
proprietor of one of the best conducted and appointed hotels in the southern tier, The Moran Hotel. Mr. Moran is
a self made man in every sense of the word. Beginning the study of telegraphy in early life in the Western Union
office at Deposit, he became telegraph operator for the Erie railroad at Lanesboro, Pennsylvania, Deposit and Port
Jervis, New York, in the later office acting as assistant train dispatcher, a position of trust and much responsibility.
Severing his connection with the railroad in 1894, Mr. Moran started in the hotel business in his home town, and
in 1907-08 built the Moran House, the Only first class hotel in Deposit today. From the beginning, Mr. Moran has
made a success of the hotel business, as his innumerable patrons all testify. Mr. Moran is a member of the Benevolent
and Protective Order of Elks, and the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Moran and Miss Winifred Murphy, of Binghamton, were married in that city on June 30, 1898, and at once began
married life in Deposit, where Mrs. Moran is an able assistant in the management of the hotel. They have one daughter,
Geraldine, a young lady of charming personality, a graduate of Barnard, 1923.
