HENRY D. HOWARD - One of the worthy citizens of Binghamton, New York, who has several times been honored with positions of trust and responsibility within the power of the voters to bestow upon him, Henry D. Howard is now holding the office of justice of the peace, which he has held for the past eighteen years. For thirty years he served as assessor and was school trustee for the same length of time. When not occupied with his official duties, Mr. Howard has devoted his time to the care of his farm, and among his fellow citizens he is truly beloved. He was born January 4, 1852, in the town of Auburn, Susquehanna county, Pennsylvania, son of thrifty and diligent parents. His father was Samuel Bloomfield Howard, and his mother, Hannah (Bunnell) Howard, both scions of old families in the county. The district schoois of Auburn were the source of Mr. Howard's formal education, but he supplemented this in the years that followed by extensive reading and observation and also special training. Soon after becoming a resident of the town of Binghamton, he entered actively into the civic affairs of the town and identified himself with the Republican party. In all the offices to which he has been appointed he has discharged the duties incumbent on them in a manner which has brought satisfaction to his constituents. He is a member of the Improved Order of Red Men. For many years Mr. Howard has been a member of the Methodist church, of Binghamton, and in his quiet, unassuming way has worked for the interests of this institution.

On August 18, 1880, Mr. Howard married, at Binghamton, Mary Addison, born there January 6, 1861, daughter of Robert Addison, a carpenter and builder, and Catherine (Wilson) Addison. They were the parents of two sons: Robert Wilson, born May 16, 1881, died in 1914; Claude Raymond, born August 5, 1886, in Binghamton; he married Pauline Hogg, and they are the parents of a child, Claude Raymond, Jr., born September 22, 1921.
