Broome County, NY Biographies

CHARLES HENRY CHRISTIAN - As former editor and publisher of the Harpursville "Budget," of Harpursville, New York, but now engaged in the private contracting business, Charles H. Christian holds a position among the important and influential citizens of that place. He has been engaged in his present occupation for several years and has attained success. Mr. Christian was born in Walton, Delaware county, New York, October 19, 1878, son of Orton A. and Eleanor (Starbird) Christian. His father was engaged in farming and the son followed this occupation for some time after completing his formal education. During his youth he had a strong desire to become associated with newspaper work, and with the determination which always wins, succeeded in reaching the position he holds today. Mr. Christian is naturally one of the men prominent in public matters in Harpursvile, and is a staunch Republican in political views. There is no movement for the general welfare but can count upon his support and through the medium of the press is brought to the attention of all its readers. He is a consistent member of the Episcopal church.

Mr. Christian married, at Whitesboro, New York, October 2, 1920, Wahneta Demeree, born in Harpursville, New York, July 4, 1895, daughter of Emerson and Elida (Welton) Demeree. The former was the founder, and subsequently editor and publisher of the paper now managed by Mr. Christian. Mr. and Mrs. Christian are the parents of a daughter, Eleanor Rhoda, born March 2, 1922, and a son, Charles Henry, Jr., born May 29, 1923.
