Biography of Clayton M. Axtell

CLAYTON MORGAN AXTELL, a leading physician of Deposit, New York, is also a prominent member of the medical fraternity of Sanford township. Dr. Axtell was born February 24, 1886, in Barbourville, New York, son of Deloss and Mary Elizabeth Axtell. His father was one of the foremost citizens of Barbourville, and was several times called upon to hold positions of trust. He represented Delaware county in the General Assembly of New York in 1898 and 1899, and also in the two succeeding years. After becoming a resident of Deposit, he was appointed supervisor of that town, an office he ably held for several years. During the World War, Mr. Axtell served as chairman of the Draft Board.

The early education of Dr. Axtell was obtained in the public schools of Deposit, and he prepared for college at the high school there. In 1909 he received his degree of M. D. from Cornell University, and for the following two years was at Bellevue Hospital. In 1912 he located in Deposit and has now been successfully engaged in the practice of his profession for ten years. In many ways Dr. Axtell has proved himself a worthy son of his father in the interest he has taken in civic matters, and he is a member of the directorate of the Farmers' National Bank. During the World War Dr. Axtell took a very active part. He was commissioned first lieutenant in the Medical Corps and -was stationed at Camp Lee. His commission was granted twenty days after his enlistment June 6, 1918, and he served until February 10, 1919. Dr. Axtell is a member of the American Medical Association, and of the State and County associations. His fraternal connections are as follows: Deposit Lodge, No. 296, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, of which he is past master; Deposit Chapter, No. 187, of which he is past high priest; Malta Commandery, Knights Templar of Binghamton, New York; Kalurah Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.

Dr. Axtell married, September 4, 1914, at Akron, Ohio, Olive Aurora Vosburgh, daughter of Walter Stewart and Ella Frances (Sherer) Vosburgh. Their children are: Clayton Morgan, Jr., born August 4, 1916; Ruth Vosburgh, born March 13, 1920; Elizabeth Ella, born September 29, 1922. The family attend the Baptist church of Deposit.
