JOHN VAN DYKE, farmer, was born in New Jersey in 1818, his father originally came from Holland, but his mother
was German. He had very little opportunity to procure much schooling: as soon he was able to walk he was set to
work on his father's farm, where he continued until his nineteenth year, when he set out for Pennsylvania, where
he procured work as a coal miner. At this occupation he remained some five years, when he went to Ohio working
at mining and farming. In 1858 he came to Elba, buying forty acres; since then he has added forty acres at a time
until he now owns 160 of the finest wheat land to be found in the state. He married Miss Sarah Nelson and has but
one son, who now mostly manages the farm.
