J. H. Whitford was born in Ohio, January 27th, 1831. When five years old, removed with his parents to Michigan,
residing there until 1855, then went to California, and engaged in mining three years. Returning to his former
home in Michigan for a brief visit, he then located on a farm in Miami county, Kansas. Came to Dakota county, Minnesota,
in 1861, and the next year located in Hampton, having at present a very desirable farm of 213 acres. In 1865, was
elected chairman of the board of supervisors, which office he held several years. Miss M. C. Luddy became his wife
in 1854. James H., Edmund A., Ellen E. and Carrie J. are their children.
