William Smith was born in Ontario, Canada, February 5th, 1839. When seventeen years old his parents removed
to Minnesota, his father preempting one hundred and sixty acres in Hampton, where he resided with his family until
his death in 1874. William enlisted in January, 1865, in Company D, First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, serving
until discharged at Fort Snelling, July 31st, 1865. He then returned to the old homestead; in 1878, started a meat
market at Cannon Falls, but two years later returned to Hampton, where he now lives.
