James Slater was born in Limerick county, Ireland, in 1820. Came to this continent in 1837, and made New York
his home until 1854. Coming westward to St. Paul, Minnesota, he took a claim of one hundred and sixty acres, in
what is now Eagan township. His farm now consists of six hundred and forty seven acres. In 1849, he married Miss
Bridget O'Brien, a native of Ireland. They have had seven children, four of whom are living: James, Mary, Annie
and George.
