J. Schmidt was born in Germany in 1818. Here he lived with his parents until nine years old, when he was left
an orphan by their death. Remaining in his native country until 1849, he then came to America, landing at New Orleans;
thence to St. Louis. Three years later he went to St. Clair county, Illinois, where he made his home seventeen
years, engaged as a plasterer. Removing to West St. Paul, Minnesota, he purchased six acres on which he lived nine

borne him nine children; Jost H., Emil L., Mary E., Julius A., Mary J. and Gottfried are the living.
