John A. Schaffer, a native of Germany, was born June 8th, 1820. For several years he worked on the railroad
and three years in a woolen factory. Caine to Dakota county, Minnesota, in 1851, locating nine miles from Hastings
and purchased 140 acres; three years later, made a claim in Hampton township of one hundred and sixty acres, to
which he since added, owning now over one thousand acres. In 1860, his stone resideuce was erected, which is the
largest in the township. Mr. Schaffer was instrumental in the building of the German Catholic church, also prominent
in promoting the interests of the first school at New Trier. Married in Germany, in 1841, to Miss Catherine Mitz.
George, Henry, Conrad, Nicholas, Adam, Mary, Margaret, Catherine and Cillie are their children.
