Barthel Miller was born in Prussia in 1848. Alter receiving a common school education, in 1867, came to America.
For one year he clerked in a book store in Chicago; thence to Minnesota and clerked in a shoe store. In 1870 he
located at Hastings, and after working in a shoe store, began that business for himself. Has since been manager
of several hotels; finally, in 1880, he purchased the City hotel where he now is. He married Miss Mary Schiltz
in 1872.
