J. N. Martin, born in Clark county, Illinois, December 5th, 1838. Came to Minnesota in 1860, and the next year
enlisted in the Third Minnesota, Company F; was promoted through the intervening offices to second lieutenant.
He participated in many of the most noted engagements, serving through the south; also against the Indians, returning
to Fort Snelling during the fail of 1862; went south again in spring of 1863, and was in the siege of Vicksburg
and battle of Little Rock, Arkansas. February 6th, 1864, he re-enlisted, and was with General Banks until the close
of hostilities. Mustered out in Arkansas, in September, 1865. Returning home; he purchased his present farm. Married
in 1867, to Miss Roseitha A. Hastings, who has borne him one son, Harlan H.
