Frederick C. Maltby is a native of New York state, born August 7th, 1835. While yet a little child his parents
removed with him to Kentucky, where he lived until ten years old, then went to Oxford, Butler county, Ohio. Here
he acquired an education, graduating from Miami university in 1853. He commencd teaching school when eighteen years
old, which vocation he followed three years in Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Coming to Minnesota in 1855, he practiced
law in St. Paul, and in 1862, purchased a farm, on which he lived seven years. Returning to the city he resided
there four years, and in 1873, came to Inver Grove township and bought a farm, and four years later opened a general
store, being at the same time appointed postmaster. Married at Oxford, Ohio, June 3d, 1856, to Miss Mary C. Guy,
a native of that state. Five children were born to them: Henry, Frederick, Guy, Mary and Alexandria.
