Joseph Freas is a native of Germany, born in 1830. Worked on a farm for ten years. Came to America in 1849.
Went to Louisville, Kentucky, making his home there six years, meanwhile learned shoe-making. In 1855, came to
Hastings, and is one of the oldest German residents. Worked at his trade two years; farmed and trucked seven years.
then went to Wisconsin and kept a hotel and saloon three years. Returning to Hastings, he kept what in known as
the American house; then built a saloon next to the Foster house and run it three years. Traded thesaloonfora farm,
and in turn traded the farm for his present property. In 1879, built the hotel where he now is. Married in 1854,
Miss Ellen Smith: Setta, Fred, August, Mollie, Tilley, Julius, Helen, Nellie and Joseph, are their children.
