James Duff was born at Buffalo, New York, March 26th, 1836. When a small child, his parents removed to near
Columbus, Indiana, where he received his early education and lived until reaching the age of twenty five years.
He then came to Minnesota and passed his first year in hunting and trapping. In 1862, he enlisted in Company F,
Eighth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, and was for two years on duty on the frontier, was sent to New Ulm during
the Indian hostilities there. The company was sent on so short notice that they were not properly equipped, being
obliged to carry ammunition in their pockets. Subsequently they were ordered south, and were finally discharged
at Fort Snelling. He then proceeded to Hampton township, and the following year, purchased his present farm. Married
September 6th, 1867, to Miss Nellie Johnson who has borne him four children: Edith M., Mable L., Helen T. and Fred
