James Bell was born in Newfleld, Tompkins county, New York, in 1834. His father was a painter, and of him James
learned the trade when eight years old. In 1861 he came to Hastings. He worked at his trade until 1870, then became
a member of the firm Bell, Rhodes and Company, which has since changed to Bell Brothers. Mr. Bell has been twice
married; his first wife was Miss Mary Cornish, of River Falls, Wisconsin. In 1878, he married Mrs Ella Fry, of
Cherry Valley, New York, by whom he has one child, Kate C.
